  2. Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → see more in the account center → Your Information and Permissions → Export your Information → Create export → Choose a profile to export Information

3. Export to Device or Export to External Service (Backblaze B2, Blogger, Daybook, Dropbox, Fabric, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Photos, Koofr, Photobucket, WordPress.com/Jetpack) → Select any one from these (In this we are selecting Export to Device)

4. Confirm your export (Customize Information, Date range, Format, Media Quality)

5. Start Export → Creating export files (It will take time) → Download Your Data.

Step 2: Importing Data into Magnet AXIOM

Once you’ve downloaded the Instagram data archive, the next step is to import it into Magnet AXIOM for processing.

Steps to Import:

  1. Open Magnet AXIOM Process.
  2. Select New Case and provide basic details like case name, investigator name, and reference number.
  3. Click Add Evidence Source → Select Instagram Data (ZIP/Extracted Folder).
  4. Choose the extracted Instagram data folder and click Next.
  5. AXIOM will automatically detect and parse available artifacts.

Step 3: Analyzing Instagram HTML Data in Magnet AXIOM

  • Refined Results (16) → Contains Social Media URLs related to Instagram.
  • Web Related (19) → Shows WebKit Browser Web History (Carved), meaning Magnet AXIOM recovered web browsing data related to Instagram.
  • Media (962) → Includes:

This happens because Instagram retains all photos and videos that have not been manually deleted by the account owner. Rest data can be ignored in this analysis.

  • Instagram Direct Messages (52,663 items): Complete conversation threads including sender, receiver, timestamps, and attachments.
  • Instagram Comments (1,046 items): Comments made on posts and replies from other users.
  • Instagram Account History (133 items): Includes account creation date, username changes, login IPs, and linked accounts.
  • Instagram Media (623 items): Photos, videos, stories, and their timestamps.
  • Social Media URLs (9,562 items): Links to profiles, followers, following lists, blocked profiles, etc.
  • Identifiers – People (5,435 items): Parsed Instagram usernames, user IDs, and related metadata.

Instagram Account History Analysis (Magnet AXIOM)

  • 133 Instagram Account History artifacts have been extracted.
  • These artifacts contain:
    • Logins
    • Logouts
    • Device information
    • IP addresses
    • Timestamps

 IP Address Evidence

  • Multiple IP addresses are recorded, meaning the account was accessed from different locations and possibly different networks.
  • These IPs can be used for geolocation analysis to identify:
    • The user’s approximate location.
    • Suspicious or unexpected logins.
    • Possible account compromise.

 

Instagram Comments (1046 artifacts)

For every comment, AXIOM provides detailed metadata, which includes:

  • Sender User Name → The Instagram username of the person who posted the comment.

  • Original Post Author → The username of the account where the comment was posted.

  • Comment Content → The actual text of the comment.

  • Comment Created Date/Time → In this screenshot, the highlighted comment was created on 29th August 2025 at 10:18:11 AM (UTC).

 

Instagram Media (623 Artifacts)

From the EVIDENCE panel, AXIOM detected the following:

  • Stories → Temporary posts uploaded by the user, later extracted even if they’re no longer visible on Instagram.
  • Reels → Short videos posted by the user or viewed by them.
  • Posts → Standard image/video uploads with captions and hashtags.

For every story, post, or reel, AXIOM provides:

  • Type → Story / Reel / Post
  • Caption → User-provided description or hashtags (e.g., #mathura, #sundernursery).
  • Title → In some cases, AXIOM parses the internal file title if available.
  • Upload Time → Can be correlated with the Instagram JSON file timestamps.
  • Preview → Right-side panel shows a video or image preview if the media file is supported.
  • File Location → Direct link to the ZIP package where the media is stored.

Instagram Direct Messages (52,663 Artifacts)

Key Fields Extracted:

  • Sender → The account initiating the message.
  • Participants → All involved users in the chat.
  • Message → Full text content or media indicators.
  • Message Sent Date/Time → Timestamp in UTC format.
  • Media Owner → Username associated with attached media.
  • Sharing Summary → Caption or short description, often linked with a post.
  • Sharing URL → Direct Instagram post/video/reel links.
  • Likers → Indicates if a message was liked (if available).

 

Group Chats & Multi-User Threads
  • Several conversations involve 3 or more participants.
  • Magnet AXIOM displays group chats, highlighting interactions between multiple accounts.
Media Evidence
  • Many messages show “You sent an attachment” → Indicates images, videos, or voice notes.
  • The Media Owner column shows usernames linked with attached files.
